David emigrated to the United States about 1858 or 1860. He married Mary (O'Donoghue) McAuliffe (Jan 1836 - 8 Jan 1914) on 17 Nov 1862 in Washington, DC.

In the 1880, 1900, and 1910 U.S. Censuses, David and Mary were living in Washington, DC. They had James P. Donahue (born c.1852) living with them in 1880. He was born in England.

In 1900, Mary was the mother of 4 children and they were all alive.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, David had Caroline Donehue (born c.1840) living with him.

David was the uncle of Mary L. Pinkham (born c.1874). She was born in New York. However, she may have been the niece of his wife. Mary was possibly the daughter of William Edward Pinkham (born c.1843) and Julia Theresa (Donohue) Pinkham (1843 - 3 Feb 1924). Mary L. Pinkham is mentioned in David's will as his niece. Also mentioned in David's will were his children, Ellen M. Vaux, Josephine M. Jones, and John J. McAuliffe; and his grandchildren, Kenneth McAuliffe, Eleanor P. McAuliffe, Richard H. Jones, and Joseph M. Jones.
