Duane M. Koontz, 82, of New Castle, passed away the morning of July 13, 2012 at Jameson Hospital.Born August 7, 1929 in Salem, Ohio, he was a son of Albert and Alice Koontz. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel E. Rodgers Koontz, on January 24, 2005.He was a graduate of Salem High School and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.He was a self employed painter.Duane enjoyed painting, playing Scrabble and spending time with his sons and family.He is survived by three step-sons, James C. (Kathy) McDanel, Roger D. (Tina) McDanel and Greg A. (companion Doris) McDanel all of New Castle; two brothers, Chuck (Barbara) Koontz and Albert "Cooney" Koontz; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his longtime friends, Kim and John Esposito.In addition to his parents and his wife Hazel, he was preceded in death by a son, Duane D. Koontz; and a step-son, Richard McDanel.Visitation will be held on Monday, July 16, 2012, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the R. Cunningham Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 2429 Wilmington Road.A service will be held immediately following visitation at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Dennis Bupp will officiate. Burial will be in Briar Hill Cemetery.
