Pearl Thompsen Blain:
State's oldest resident, 110, dies in Roy

ROY -- Pearl Thompsen Blain, the oldest person in Utah, died Saturday at age 110.

Blain was born Oct. 13, 1895, the same year Marconi invented radio transmission. Blain was in her late 30s when the Great Depression began and also lived during several major wars.

Blain grew up in Spring City in Sanpete County. She lived in South Ogden for many years and most recently resided at the Heritage Park Care Center in Roy.

"She had a good life and lived in three centuries," said son Alton Blain, 78, of Roy. Alton said he didn't know the secret of his mother's longevity, but suggested perhaps it was her aversion to pills. "She never took medication on a regular basis," he said.

Pearl Blain loved her family and friends, Alton said, and was friendly to everyone she met. She had three children, 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

She outlived her husband, Grover Blain, who died in 1978, and one of her sons.

With Pearl Blain's death, the oldest Utahn is Rhea Barnett, of West Jordan, who turns 108 on March 17, according to the state Division of Aging and Adult Services.

The oldest Utahn who ever lived is John Joe Begay, a Navajo tribe member who lived in San Juan County. He died in 2001, just three months before his 117th birthday.
