French Folk Figure. Born in France and raised in England with his adoptive mother, Meves claimed to have been the Dauphin of France, Louis, the son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. He purported to have been swapped for the child of his mother's great friend and spirited to England to be raised in safety. In 1876, his son Auguste de Bourbon, published a book entitled ‘The Dauphin Louis XVII, King of France, His Deliverence From the Tower of the Temple at Paris, Adoption, and Subsequent Career in England' detailing his father's claims. Louis Napoleon was said to have believed Meves was actually the hereditary King of France.
