Eleanor June Simmons passed away peacefully on Tuesday October 30th 2018 at the age of 90 due to a stroke at a hospital in Hillsboro, OR. She was born Eleanor June Wells in Rainier, WA. June 21, 1928. Eleanor was raised in Rainier, Washington and graduated from Rainier High School in June 1945 at the age of 17. She then attended one year at Walla Walla College in Walla Walla, Washington. Following her year at Walla Walla College she moved to Olympia, Washington and worked at Puget Power and Light Company where she met and fell in love with Harry Simmons, Jr. They were married March 21, 1947 and they celebrated 52 years of marriage before Harry passed away June 5, 1999 at the age of 78.

Eleanor is survived by one daughter LaDeane (Simmons) Heaton of Aloha, OR. and 3 sons Reed Simmons of Kailua, Kona, Hawaii – Tracy Simmons of Puunene Kahului, Hawaii – Wade Simmons of Allensville, Pennsylvania – 4 Grand Daughters – 6 Great Grand Children and 1 Great Great Grandson along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eleanor was an artist and she joined the Olympia Art League in Olympia Washington in 1947 where she began exhibiting her art. She enjoyed all art media and had a special interest in pastels, pottery and enjoyed making porcelain dolls. She studied with and received a diploma from the LaSelle Extension University in 1967 in Interior Decorating and she had an article written about her in the Dailey Olympian Newspaper and taught Art Classes at the Olympia YWCA. Another passion of Eleanor’s was writing poetry and she won numerous awards from the World of Poetry from 1985 to 1990.

She worked for the State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries for the State Board of Appeals.
Eleanor was a member of the American Society of Training and Development. She also volunteered at Black Hills Community Hospital and Capital Medical Center, Voters of Thurston County and Vets First all located in Olympia, Washington. She also found time to commit to a special interest she developed, “Garage Sale-ing” as often as possible.
Eleanor’s Children will be having a Family Interment Service of her urn at Forest Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Olympia, WA. The date and time are pending. Friends who wish may contribute to a charity of choice in Eleanor’s memory.
