By 1915, the couple had separated and Charlie returned to live with his parents in Larned. His occupation was listed as "clergyman" in the 1915 Kansas census.
After Charlie's mother died in early 1917, he enlisted in Company F of the 2nd Regiment, Kansas National Guard; however, in August 1917, he and nine other enlisted men were not mustered in after completing physical examinations. Shortly after that, Charlie married his second wife, Hazel Collier, a young woman with a daughter from her previous marriage.
The couple moved to Hutchinson, where Charlie died on 12 March 1919, five months before his son Charles Collier Jenkins would be born.
