He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Lynn Duke; grandchildren: Krystal Jolene Martin and Kori Newland; brother, Billy Newland; and sisters, Barbara Molindor and LaDonna Kristen.
Survivors include his sons, Virgil Jack Newland and VJ Newland, Jr.; daughters: Sheila Newland, Cynthia Newland, and Linda Brindlee; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dannie Lee Newland and David Joe Newland; sisters: Linda Maggard, Brenda Allen, Joan Jenson, Loretta Wiese, and Rita Isom; and many other family and friends.
