Alice Harby Shelor, Sumter, S. C. Her father was influenced by "Miss Nina" Moise Phelps (1874-1973) to build the TB facility (Fortnightly Club book of papers, p93, 1972 paper by Robert A. Moise).

Camp Alice tuberculosis hospital ("TB" sanatorium"), Sumter, S. C. built in 1916 & closed about 1941...Alice Dr. so named as road going near Camp Alice. Mrs. Harby died of TB.

This is a near-final draft of a 1941 letter announcing the closure of the Camp Alice tuberculosis ("TB sanatorium") hospital located on the Camp Alice Road west of Sumter. My uncle, E. Murr Hall had the drafts and may have been secretary-treasurer.

HISTORY:
H. J. Harby constructed a treatment center for those individuals infected with one of the most dreaded diseases in the history of man, tuberculosis (”TB”). The facility was completed in 1916 and was located on what would become the intersection of Wise and Alice drive. He chose a quiet location in what was then rural Sumter, where his clients could rest and recover in solitude. The current Alice Drive Street was named for Alice Harby Shelor who was married to Robert Shelor who moved to Sumter with the Sumter Telephone Manufacturing Company. He later became the manager of the Sumter Telephone Company, soon married Alice Harby, and together they had two sons, Robert and Henry. Alice became infected with tuberculosis and died in 1918 at the age of 33. Her father, H. J. Harby, became interested in finding a method of treating this deadly disease and dedicated his life and resources to this end.
