Howard Wyatt Peters, 62, of McAlester, passed away peacefully in his home on November 3, 2018 following a long and courageous battle with Cancer.

He was born on November 27, 1955 in Bossier City, Louisiana to Sherrill “Pete” and Doris Peters. An “Air Force brat,” Howard lived in various locations including Newfoundland, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. At the age of 12 he met the love of his life, Janelle Utterback. The two “grade school sweethearts” were married on September 1, 1972, and recently celebrated their 45th anniversary.

Howard served honorably in the United States Air Force before beginning his long-standing career in law enforcement. He was a police officer for the McAlester Police Department for several years before joining the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics (OBN) as a Drug Enforcement Agent. During his tenure at OBN he frequently worked undercover and was a highly successful drug dog handler. At the time of his retirement from OBN late last year, Howard was Agent in Charge of the McAlester District Office. He had proudly served his community for a total of 35 years.

He was well known for his love of lawn mowing and weed-eating, even mowing his lawn 6 days before his death. Howard was an avid Texas Rangers fan, a lover of horses and trail riding, motorcycle riding, and a collector of bobble heads. He loved his dogs almost as much as he loved his children, but not nearly as much as he loved his grandchildren.

He was a member of the McAlester First United Methodist Church, Association of Oklahoma Narcotics Enforcers, Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Employee Association and the Fraternal Order of Police.

Howard was admired for his strength and tenacity as well as his caring heart, good humor and service to others.

He was preceded in death by his father; his sister, Pam Echols; his beloved grandson, Jaymeson West; his father in law, Jim Utterback; and his brother in law, Ronnie Sillmon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Janelle Peters, of the home; his son, James Peters and wife Annette of Tulsa; his daughter, Shannon Schwarz and husband Chris, of Broken Arrow; his mother Doris Peters, of McAlester; his cherished grandchildren, Jonathan Peters, Emily Peters, and Cooper Scherman; his mother in law, Jimmie Ann Utterback of McAlester; his sister in law, Annette Sillmon of Krebs; his brother in law, Dr. James Utterback and wife Karrie, of Seminole; his brother in law, Joe Echols of Florida; his faithful dogs, Izzy, Penny, and Diva; a loving extended family, and countless friends.

Visitation is scheduled on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home, 1410 E Carl Albert Parkway, McAlester, OK.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1501 S. 13th St., McAlester OK. Interment to follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Building Fund at the First United Methodist Church of McAlester or to the Utterback Family Scholarship Fund at the Seminole State College Educational Foundation.
