Phillip A, Norton, Sr., age 90, of Cataumet, MA and Naples, FL, died peacefully on Friday, October 26, 2018, with his loving family by his side. Phil is predeceased by his beautiful and fun-loving wife, Louise (Dandini) Norton for whom he was married to for 56 years and raised a family with on Cape Cod. He is also predeceased by his oldest and beloved daughter, Maura (Norton) Sullivan.
Phil leaves behind his devoted children whom he often called his "finest achievements": Phillip Norton, the late Maura (Norton) Sullivan and Gerald Sullivan, Thomas and Becky Norton, Timothy Norton, Jane Norton and Leslie Sullivan, Judy Norton Senfleben, Julianne and Arne Duss, and 14 grandchildren he cherished: Kevin, Alyssa, Alaina, Ryan, Jamie, Taylor, Sam, Patrick, Kiley, Ricarda, Maggie, David, Austin and Lucy. Phil enjoyed following each of his grandchildren's milestones, activities and athletic feats.
Phil was the son of the late Thomas and Grace (Reilly) Norton and the brother of the late Ann Norton, Mary Ahearn, Thomas Norton, and Doris McKenna and is survived by his dear sisters Grace (Norton) Carney and Sister Jane Norton, SBS. Phil was a West Newton native and graduated from St. Mary's High School and from Boston College after serving in the Army.
Phil was a pioneer in high school athletics and was awarded countless local, state and national awards as a teacher, coach and athletic director in the Norton and Bourne school systems, including Massachusetts Athletic Director of the Year and Regional Athletic Director of the Year by the National Council of Secondary School Athletic Directors.
Phil was instrumental in creating drug and alcohol and code of conduct policies for both coaches and athletes. In addition, Phil worked tirelessly to establish female sports across the state in the 60's and 70's. As an educator, Phil strongly believed that a student's educational experience was greatly enhanced by team sports participation.
Phil and his beloved wife Louise enjoyed their twilight years on Kiawah Island, South Carolina and with the Fox Fire community in Naples, FL. Phil was often seen rollerblading with his cowboy hat on while smoking a cigar and carrying a hockey stick. Phil was blessed to have a legion of friends in Fox Fire. He was called a legend because of his sharp mind, very quick wit, captivating storytelling and fun-loving competitive spirit. Phil's athletic prowess on the golf course was the envy of many on the courses of New Seabury, Kiawah and Naples.
