Glenn Arvil Jenkins, 95, of Sloan, Iowa, passed peacefully into eternal rest at his home, surrounded by his family, on Friday, November 2, 2018.
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 7, 2018, at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa, with Pastor Michael Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Sloan Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 6, 2018, with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M., at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Glenn lived to the respectable age of 95 years, 10 months, and 30 days. He was born December 3, 1922, on a farm northeast of Onawa, the third child of Edward and Mary Letha Bell (Cummins) Jenkins. As a young boy, he moved with his family to Sergeant Bluff in 1928, attending schools in the Sergeant Bluff and Salix areas until 1943. In 1943, he moved with his family to a farm southwest of Whiting. Growing up, Glenn worked many farms with his parents and siblings, picking corn by hand and working the horses. This is where he grew his love for the land and learned the joys and rewards of farming.
Glenn met and later married Alice Marion Byers on January 28, 1946. In 1947, Glenn and Alice moved to a farm east of Sloan, where they raised their children, five sons and five daughters.
He began farming in 1946 and was a lifelong farmer in the Sloan area for seventy years, actively farming to the age of 93, harvesting and working the fields until failing health forced him to retire. The hardest thing about aging for Glenn was losing the ability to work the land. The farm on which Glenn and Alice made their home became a Century Farm in 1979, an accomplishment of which they both were proud. Glenn was very proud to be a farmer and it brought great joy and satisfaction to him. He still owned the first tractor he ever purchased, a “B” Farmall.
He had many hobbies including gardening and working in his woodshop. He also enjoyed long rides in the country looking at the crops, and riding his golf cart around the farm. Glenn defined himself by his strong work ethic. He was a caretaker and steward of the land. He was honest, hardworking, patient, gentle, and humble. Glenn lived well. He lived a long, good, strong, and clean life. Glenn was extremely proud of his family and spent many hours sharing stories and bits of wisdom with them. Glenn was a caring and loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, or “Papa” as he was lovingly called by his great-grandchildren.
Glenn is survived by his children, Glenn Jenkins Jr. of Sloan, IA, Douglas Jenkins of Salix, IA, Phillips and wife Linda Jenkins of Sloan, IA, Roger and wife Blanche Jenkins of Sloan, IA, Betty and husband Stephen Hickman of Faribault, MN, Charlotte Hemmrich of Overland Park, KS, Lester and wife Jane Jenkins of Whiting, IA, Karen Jenkins of Sloan, IA, and Leann Jenkins of Sloan, IA; eleven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Beverly Jenkins; former daughter-in-law, Mary Jenkins; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
