Marie Elizabeth Pilliod, 62, died today of cancer in Akron City Hospital. The former Marie Elizabeth Jacobs, known to her friends as Betty, was the wife of Charles Pilliod Jr., retired chairman and chief executive officer at Goodyear. Services are being arranged by Dunn-Quigley-Ciriello & Carr funeral home in Fairlawn. Beacon Journal columnist Polly Paffilas described Mrs. Pilliod as "a very caring-type person." Besides taking care of her family, she always found time to make contributions to the community," Miss Paffilas said. The largest part of that contribution was directed toward Children's Hospital-Medical Center of Akron, where Mrs. Pilliod was a member of the women's board. Peg Seeley, president of the board, said Mrs. Pilliod "was a well-respected member of the women's board and did much for the hospital behind the scenes through her husband." Mrs. Pilliod was a longtime volunteer at the hospital and its gift shop. She also was active in the annual charity ball sponsored by the women's board and was instrumental in having the ball moved to Goodyear Hall in recent years." Mrs. Seeley said Mrs. Pilliod recently had gone on associate status with the hospital group because of her failing health. One of the people at the hospital who won't forget Mrs. Pilliod and her kindness is Dr. James Lehman Jr. When the Lehman home was gutted by fire, Mrs. Pilliod invited the doctor and his family to use the Pilliod home for more than three months while their home was being repaired. The Pilliods had moved to a condominium after Pilliod retired from Goodyear. In appreciation, Lehman has set up the Betty Pilliod Visiting Professorship in Pediatric Plastic Surgery at the hospital. The lecture series will bring top surgeons See 'BETTY' PILLIOD, page B2
