He began his career at the Commercial National Bank in Cleveland and answered the call for volunteers during the Civil War, returning to he bank in 1863. In 1864 he left the bank to enter the oil business in Titusville, PA where he would become treasurer of Standard Oil Co. (1876 to 1894). With additional investments in steel, mining, sulfur and salt, he was able to retire in 1894.

An active supporter of the Presbyterian Church and a benefactor church related higher education. In 1902, Dr. Cornelius Steffens of a German Theology School in Dubuque, Iowa approached him but was informed that Dubuque was not in his philanthropic plans. In February 1906, the school received a letter pledging $1000. As time went by, Dr. Steffens approached Severance again for support in the expansion of the buildings of the school. This eventually led to the donation of $75,000 for the construction of a 3-floor, brick men's dormitory of more than 80 rooms that would be dedicated on December 3, 1912 as Severance Hall. The building continues to serve as a residence hall for students of the Presbyterian Theological Seminary on the campus of the University of Dubuque.
