Methodist leader. Bishop Holt was consecrated Bishop in 1938 and served six years as Bishop in Texas and eastern New Mexico before returning to St. Louis in 1944, where he presided as Methodist Bishop of Missouri until his retirement in 1959. Born in Arkansas, he was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Vanderbilt University and taught Greek and Latin for three years before being ordained in the Methodist Church in 1909. He later organized University Methodist Church in University City, Missouri before becoming pastor of Centenary Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he remained until 1913. He then went to Southern Methodist University as a professor of Old Testament and Chaplain and then came to St. John's Methodist Church in St. Louis as pastor, a position he held until his election as Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1938. When the Methodist factions were unified in 1939, he was made Bishop of the Methodist Church and remained in that capacity until his retirement in 1959.

In his universal ministry, he served at various times as president of the World Methodist Council, which he founded, the Council of Bishops of the Methodist Church, the Federal Council of Churches and as one of six co-presidents of the World Council of Churches. In 1939 he was a representative at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, Switzerland, which sought to prevent war. He was named "Christian of the World" as the churchman who had done the most to promote world friendship through religion in 1956.
