Hamlin was born in New York. He married Delia Culver by 1837 most likely in Sullivan County, New York. The couple initially settled in Fallsburg, Sullivan County.

Hamlin and his family were in Thompson, Sullivan County, New York by 1850 where he was an inn keeper. There was another move to back to Fallsburg by 1855 where Hamlin was a tailor.

The family then migrated to Porter Township, Porter County, Indiana in 1857-1858 where Hamlin continued his trade as tailor. His wife and eldest daughter Hannah died shortly thereafter. Perhaps the move to Porter County was due to his brother-in-law Munson Culver who had earlier moved to the area.

The couple had the following children all born in Sullivan County: Hannah, Amos, Mary, George W, Lewis (aka Herman), Clara E., and Aaron M.

After the death of Delia, Hamlin married Mary M. Smith on April 26, 1859 in Porter County.

Hamlin became the Postmaster for Hickory Point in Porter County on December 11, 1858. His wife Mary taking over his position on May 26, 1868.

His wife Mary and sons, Amos and Aaron went onto Michigan after his death. His daughter, Mary, married Armour McFarland and remained in Porter County for most of her life. George, Lewis and Clara went to Prairie Township in Wilson County, Kansas.
