A son of W. H. and Jane Challener, the deceased was born in Mt. Pleasant township on February 26, 1863. He was united in marriage with Anna Mary Peacock, also of Mt. Pleasant township, and they observed their 50th wedding anniversary on March 25, 1936. Her death occurred on November 14, 1940.
For a short time following their marriage, they resided in Mt. Pleasant township, and then moved to McConnells Mill, where they had since resided, and where Mr. Challener conducted a general store.
Mr. Challener was an elder of the Houston United Presbyterian church and was a school director of Chartiers township for more than 20 years. He enjoyed good health until his lust illness and was unusually active despite his advanced years.
Survivors are three sons: Dr. John C. Challener, McKeesport; William A. Challener, Washington; and George M. Challener, Canonsburg. There are six grandchildren, two of whom are in service: Lieut. James G. Challener, in New Guinea: and Lieut. Robert B. Challener, at Drew Field. Fla. Also surviving are one brother and one sister, Attorney W. A. Challener and Mrs. Walter Weaver, both of Pittsburgh; also four greatgrandchildren.
Friends will be received at the late home at McConnells Mill this evening after 7 o'clock. Funeral services will be held at the First United Presbyterian church, Houston, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in charge of the Rev. James B. Orth, pastor. Interment will be in Oak Spring cemetery. The W. H. McNary Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
