George M. Challener, 67, 226 Spruce St., Canonsburg, died of a heart attack at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 1960, in his office at the George M. Challener Real Estate and Insurance Agency in Canonsburg. He had been active in the real estate and insurance business in Canonsburg for the past 40 years.
Mr. Challener was born July 26, 1892, in McConnells Mills, a son of the late George H. and Ann Peacock Challener. He spent his entire life in Canonsburg, where he took an active part in community work. He was a member of Houston United Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Challener was secretary of Chartiers Building and Loan Association, Canonsburg, for the past 35 years. He was a charter member and past president of Canonsburg-Houston Rotary Club and a member of K of P Lodge 204; BPOE Lodge 846; Western Star Lodge 21, F and AM, Youngstown, Ohio; Scottish Rite, Valley of Pittsburgh; Syria Temple, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania Association of Insurance Agents. He was married in 1913. in Canons burg to Lillian Beedle, who survives.
Also surviving are two sons, James G., Tampa, Fla. and Robert B. Clearwater, Fla.; one brother, Dr. John C. Challener, McKeesport and two grandchildren. One brother, William A., is deceased.
Friends will be received be tween the hours of 24 and 79 p.m. Monday and until time of services at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, in the Griffith Funeral Home, Canonsburg. Services will be in charge of the Rev. Harry W. Rankin, pastor of Houston U. P. Church and Dr. W. Franklin Harkey, pastor of Third Presbyterian Church, Washington. Burial in Oak Spring Cemetery.
