Son of John Sherwin, Jr. and Martha Leland Sherwin. Brother of Alden Wheelock Sherwin, Martha Leland Sherwin, John Proctor Sherwin, Lucretia Smith Sherwin, and Nelson Boynton Sherwin.

School teacher and interim pastor of the Second Baptist Church of Richmond (Washington County, Rhode Island) from 1864-1865. Founder of the Wilberforce Institute at Carolina Mills (Washington County, Rhode Island) for the education of colored teachers and ministers.
