Wise Potato Chips supervisor was Army medic
Martin J. Harmon Sr., 86, of Berwick, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at his home. He was born June 13, 1932, in Shickshinny, a son to the late Harry and Alice (Musselman) Harmon.
Martin was a 1951 graduate of Berwick High School. He then served honorably in the Army as a medic until his discharge in 1953. Until retiring in 1994, Martin worked as a supervisor at the Wise Potato Chip Company for 41 years.
He belonged to the Columbia Montour Barber Shoppers and had a real passion for hunting, especially for deer and rabbits with his beagles. Martin was a longtime member at Bethany United Methodist Church, where he had a served in many ministries, including the church choir for 31 years.
Surviving Martin is his loving wife of 26 years, the former Joan Thomas. Additionally surviving are five sons: Daniel and wife, Cathy of Berwick, Thomas and wife, Brenda, of Harvey’s Lake, Martin Jr. and wife, Nancy, of Berwick, and Timothy and Michael, both of Berwick; daughter, Susan Cope, of Nescopeck; eight grandchildren: Daniel, Jamie, Michelle, Renee, Mark, Jessica, Desirae, and Austin; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Betty Hoyson, of Berwick.
As well as his parents, Martin was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Janice Hunter, in 1990. Also preceding were three brothers: William, Jack, and Herbert; and two sisters: Mary and Dorothy.
Martin was a kind and loving man with a servant’s heart. He will be sorely missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him.
All are welcome to join Martin’s family at his viewings: 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Kelchner-McMichael-Baker Funeral Home, 119-121 E. Third St., Berwick, and 10-11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 5, at Bethany United Methodist Church, 116 Summerhill Ave., Berwick. Martin’s funeral is 11 a.m. Monday at Bethany. The Rev. Thomas D. Harmon of West Falls Baptist Church will serve as the officiant. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery.
