OTTUMWA-Samuel E. “Sam” Butler, 88, of Ottumwa and formerly of Fremont died at 2:20 a.m. October 29, 2018 at Hospice House in Ottumwa.

He was born October 1, 1930 in Davenport, IA to Samuel L. and Leota Florence Craft Butler. He married Joann Lemke on July 7, 1951.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War.

He lived 40 years in Fremont before moving to Koshkonong, MO then returning to Ottumwa in 2015.

He was a member of Koshkonong United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Dan (Jill) Butler of Fremont and John (Pam) Butler of New Windsor, IL; two daughters, Teri (John) Lee of Tonopah, AZ and Kathy (Ray) Lasser of Ottumwa; eight grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; two brothers, Tom Butler and Nova Holtzinger of Iowa City; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral with Pastor Bob Voels officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation begins after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice serving Davis and Wapello Counties, P.O. Box 1150, Ottumwa, IA 52501.
