Additional information from Mr. C

June Simmons was born July 30, 1929 at Christ Hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was the eldest daughter of Jenny Elizabeth Johnson and James Johnson. She had two sisters, the late Jamesina Elizabeth Johnson-Nelson and Dr. Marcel Louise Paschall-Wiggins. She also had a half-brother named Sterling. She was raised in Jersey City, New Jersey where she attended elementary school at PS 33 and PS 24, graduated from Lincoln High School at age 16 and attended Jersey City State College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She often mentioned memories of when she and her sister Betty used to retrieve wood from the bitter cold temperatures outside for the family to stay warm in their cold water flat. She worked at a warehouse in East Newark to continue her college education and work career at the time, where she met her future husband, the late Thomas Harding Simmons. They wed and had seven children; Peter T., Thomas H. Jr., the late Lawrence B., Rev. Charles A., June L., Jacqueline M. and the late Joanne S.

She learned to play the bass fiddle, piano, and learned to speak German and Spanish while in college. She was an avid reader and won awards on her bowling teams while teaching at the Newark Board of Education for many years. She received her Master’s Degree from Kean University. She raised all seven children on her own after her marriage split up, but would never get a divorce and they always kept in touch. She and her sisters always stayed close and their children stayed closer.

She was a woman that wore many hats. She was an Educator, a Tax Preparer, a Real Estate Agent and Attendance Counselor/ Truancy Task Force Officer. She also once worked as a teacher for mentally ill children. But most of all she was a Wonderful, Kind, Caring, Supportive, loving and the Greatest Mother and Grandmother you could ever want. She would give a helping hand whenever needed and always gave good advice.

Her favorite saying was “Aww, Bologna!” We were raised with songs such as “Good Morning, Good Morning, Good Morning to You” and it’s time to wake up…WAKE UP, WAKE UP, WAKE UP” or tickling you out of your sleep.

June D. Simmons is survived by her dear sister, Dr. Marcell Louise Paschell-Wiggins, her children Peter T., Thomas H. Jr., Rev. Charles A., June L., Jacqueline M. and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great –grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She always emphasized the importance of a good education to us all (and our children). My lasting memories of mom are simple; a hard working passionate figure of strength who never waned in her support or love of her family and who soldiered on even when times were tough.

You are loved and will be missed dearly. Rest in peace.
