Born William Charles Fischer, he attended Marathon High School in Wisconsin, where he played baseball and basketball. He was signed by the Chicago White Sox as an amateur free agent in 1948 and made his Major League debut on April 21, 1956. In 281 career regular season games, he compiled a 45 win, 58 loss record, with a lifetime 4.34 ERA, in 831 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as a scout with the Kansas City Royals, and later pitching coach with the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
