Cpl. Hamm of Baltimore, Md., struggled in school, kept to himself and initially failed an Army test in seeking to enlist. But he tried again and succeeded a few months before his 18th birthday. He graduated from Carver Vocational Technical High School in 2004 after a period when he came close to dropping out after his father died in 2000. He joined the Army in November 2004 and arrived at Fort Lewis in April 2005 after basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. His awards included the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terror Service Medal and Army Service Medal, according to the Defense Department. Jonathan was sent to Kuwait 10 days after his mother's funeral when she died of breast cancer. He died in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds sustained when his forward operating base received indirect enemy fire at age 20.
