Ruth C. Shannon

Shannon, Ruth C. of Wayzata, MN, died peacefully on the evening of November 18, 2017 at age 99. She was born October 26, 1918 in Rochester, NY. After working for Eastman Kodak for 5 years, she served in the Navy (WAVES) during World War II, stationed in New York City from 1942 to 1944. She served as personal secretary to N.Y. State Senator Thomas Laverne and to U.S. Senator Kenneth Keating. She married her best friend and the love of her life, James P. Shannon, in 1969.
They moved to Wayzata, MN in 1975 where she became very involved with the community. She worked with good friend, Gail See at the Bookcase, served as an election judge in Wayzata, and was named Wayzata Citizen of the Year in 1992. She and Jim, along with LaDonna Hoy, helped found Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners, an organization that has helped thousands in the western Minneapolis area. She remained active volunteering with IOCP well into her 80s.
She is survived by daughter-in-law, Elaine Van Wieren; grandsons, Jon and Steve (Starla) Van Wieren; great-granddaughters, Chaney, Grace and Becca Van Wieren; sister, Mary Sandy; nephews, Fred, Jim and Bob Sandy; nieces, Linda Jacobs, Karen Destino, Patti Herzog, and Jill Anderson, and many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Shannon; parents, Wilbur and Eunice Jardine; sisters, Jane Anderson and Helen Jardine, and son, Pete Van Wieren.
