Mr. Donald G. Pickerill entered this life on Nov. 19, 1924, in Hastings, Iowa, and departed it on May 16, 2007, at Decatur General Hospital to join God. Raised in Nebraska, he was preceded in death by his parents, Nello J. and Agnes Mary Pickerill.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Grant Pickerill; their daughter, Sarah Jayne Pickerill; their grandchildren, Briana and Adam Hardiman; their great-grandchildren, Kyleigh and Brandon and twin brother, Arnold; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
At the age of 19, he joined the U.S. Navy to protect his country during World War II. He served as First Class Gunners Mate on three Navy ships, traveling around the world twice during wartime danger. For his patriotic service, he received the Victory Medal. He finished No. 1 in his class in Specialty Hydraulics Maintenance School.
After an honorable discharge, he became known for his work in U.S. Agriculture and Commodities with the Lincoln Grain Exchange. He was later recruited by then Gov. "Big Jim" Folsom to come to Alabama as the chief grain analyst for the state, and worked as a civil servant for Alabama for 30 years. Upon retirement, he joined his wife in business with Mr. G 's Antiques. He was talented in woodworking and antique restoration, enjoyed fishing and loved animals and people. He was recently inducted into the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding performance in High School Athletics in the 1930s.
Visitation will be Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home. Funeral will be Sunday, May 20, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Hal Daige officiating. A graveside service will follow at Hopewell Cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity.
