Velma, the daughter of the late Fred Sr. and Gertrude Fisher Harwell, was born Oct. 9, 1929 in Butler County. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and had retired from Union Pacific Railroad. Velma enjoyed traveling, listening to country music, shopping (loved shoes) and dancing. The time most treasured was being with her family.
Velma married Edward Harold Carter on Feb. 22, 1946 in Poplar Bluff. He preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 2007.
Survivors include three children, Bert Thomas (Faye Ella) Carter, Susan Patterson and Debra (Gary) Colter; two grandchildren, Janna Gayle Carter and Tyler Edward Patterson all of Poplar Bluff; two brothers, Fred (Merle) Harwell Jr. of San Antonio, Texas and J. C. (Betty) Harwell of Poplar Bluff; four sisters, Betty Pyle, Barb (Lonnie) Lundry, Lana (Richard) Adair and Darlene (David) McCoach all of Poplar Bluff; a sister-in-law, Shirley S. Harwell of Poplar Bluff; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Ann Carter, a grandson Brian Lee Halter and two brothers Carroll Harwell and Jerry (Shirley) Harwell
Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with the funeral service immediately following at 2 p.m. Bro. Gary Cochran will officiate. A graveside service and entombment will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery Mausoleum.
