John Leslie Covington, 82, of Appomattox, died Monday, October 29, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving husband of Lorene Poindexter Covington.

Born in Danville, January 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Mabel Lewis and Frank Leslie Covington. John was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where he served as a former Deacon. He was active in their “Project Compassion” ministry and was a member of the Singing Christians while a member of Evergreen Baptist Church. He was a member of the United States Air Force and was deployed to bases in Korea and the United States.

In addition to his wife he is survived by two daughters, Karen C. Cyrus and husband, Terry “Butch”, and Amy L. Covington all of Appomattox; eight grandchildren, Richard and Brittany Covington, John Covington, Amanda C. Cucci and husband, Gabriele, Kelly Cyrus, Michael Cyrus, Jacob “Jake” Poole, Daniel Poole, and Sarah Poole.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Leslie Covington and a sister, Marjorie C. Barbour.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Liberty Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Rusty Small officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence.
