Continental Congressman and Connecticut Governor. He graduated from Yale in 1767, studied law and became an attorney in Farmington. Treadwell was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1776 to 1785 and Clerk of the Probate Court from 1777 to 1784. In 1785 he became a member of the Governor's Council, serving until 1798. Treadwell was elected to the Continental Congress and served from 1784 to 1785. He was elected again in 1787 but did not attend any sessions. From 1786 to 1797 Treadwell served as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. In 1788 he was a Delegate to the state convention that ratified the US Constitution. In 1789 Treadwell became Judge of the Probate Court and the Supreme Court of Errors, serving until 1809. In 1798 he was elected Connecticut's Lieutenant Governor, an office he also held until 1809. In August 1809 Treadwell became Governor when Governor Jonathan Trumbull died in office. He was elected to a full term in 1810 and served until 1811. After running unsuccessfully for reelection he lived in semi-retirement, writing about religion and studying the New Testament in the original Greek. Treadwell was also a founder of the Connecticut Missionary Society and served on the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. In 1818 he served as a Delegate to the Connecticut constitutional convention.
