James H. Redden, Jr., age 91, of Shady Spring, WV, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Saturday, October 27, 2018.

Born on December 4, 1926 at the Cloverdale family farm in Bragg, WV. James was the son of James Harrison Redden, Sr. and Lottie Minta Goodson Redden.

Mr. Redden served in the U.S. Army from 1945-49. In which he was a surgical Technician working as a Dental Assistant receiving the Victory Medal WWII and the Army of Occupation Medal WWII with Japan Clasp. His experience in Occupied Japan left a lasting impression with him as a young man from West Virginia.

He began his higher educational experience while in Japan attending Tokyo Army College. Returning to West Virginia he graduated from Beckley College, Morris Harvey College, and Marshall University. Mr. Redden’s post graduate work was completed at Marshall University and West Virginia University.

Mr. Redden had a wealth of knowledge from his experiences in landscaping, farming, education, and travel, was known to everyone he met, as to have never met a stranger. His devotion for education was inspiring to colleagues and students alike.

Mr. Redden’s teaching occupation began as a teacher in a one room school on Irish Mountain and Freezeland Mountain located in Richmond District in Raleigh County. From there, he moved on to serve as principal of the Union Elementary School in Charleston, West Virginia, from 1953-1955. Upon returning to Raleigh County, he was appointed principal of the Richmond District High School from 1955-67.
In 1967, he became Vice Principal at Stratton Jr. High School and thereafter served as Principal until his retirement.

His love of the outdoors and animals was always apparent and during the course of his teaching career he maintained his working family farm in Bragg, WV, raising cattle and other livestock, and where you could find him every day following his retirement from education.
Mr. Redden served in numerous organizations such as W.V.E.A., Ruritans and many agricultural groups. Serving as President of the Raleigh County Educators Federal Credit Union, starting in 1984, was one of his most valued endeavors. He was a visionary in the Credit Union and was very proud of the success and services it provided for Raleigh County employees.

In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by brothers, Andrew, John Chapman, Elsworth, Albert, Jonah, Arnold, and one sister, Pansy Marie.

Those survivors left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Madeline of Shady Spring, one daughter, Deborah Gallaher of Shady Spring, one son, Douglas Redden and wife Penny of Stuart, Virginia; grandson, Douglas Miles Redden of Cincinnati, Ohio; grandson John Wayne Gallaher Jr. and wife Alicia of Daniels, West Virginia; two great-grandchildren; John Corey Harrison Gallaher and Andrew James Wayne Gallaher, both of Daniels, West Virginia. Additional survivors include; his beloved sister, Genevieve Roper of Shady Spring, West Virginia; one brother Okey Redden of Cleveland, Ohio; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends special thanks for the compassionate care provided by Amedysis Home Care and various friends and companions.

Funeral services will be conducted at Shady Spring Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Shady Spring on Friday, November 2, 2018 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Jesse Farley officiating. Burial will follow at Redden Memorial Gardens, Bragg, West Virginia. Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at the Shady Spring Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapel in Shady Spring, West Virginia. Pallbearers will include family and friends.
