Sergeant Ralph E. Harper, DSN 7827, was originally hired as a Police Cadet with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department on 06/22/1970. In this capacity he worked in the following districts and specialized divisions. They were the Police Academy, Homicide Section, 3Rd, and the 4Th Districts. Due to the Vietnam War Sergeant Harper was drafted into the military and had to resigned his position in the Cadet Program on 06/01/1972. Sergeant Harper was rehired on 07/15/1974 as a Police Cadet and received his commission and entered the Police Academy on 07/22/1974. Upon completion of the academy Sergeant Harper was assigned to the following districts and specialized divisions. They were the 2Nd, Mobile Reserve Section, 3Rd, and the Juvenile Division. Sergeant Harper was promoted on 04/10/1989 to the command rank of Sergeant and was subsequently transferred from the Juvenile Division and would serve in the 3Rd, Prisoner Processing Division, 3Rd, Area 1 Station, 3Rd, and finally the Juvenile Division as a Detective Sergeant. During his career Sergeant Harper was the recipient of 2 Department Awards of Excellence on 03/21/1996, and 02/19/2004 for police work above the call of duty. Sergeant Harper retired on 09/03/2007 and had a total combine service of 37.20 years of faithful and dedicated service to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department. It should be noted there are very few families in the history of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department that have had total family commitment and dedication to serve the police department like the Harper family. Sergeant Ralph Harper was a 2Nd generation Police Officer and was the son of the late Captain Edward S. Harper, DSN 0861, SLMPD, brother of Lieutenant Edward Harper, DSN 1964, SLMPD, retired, Lieutenant John Harper, DSN 0406, SLMPD, retired, Mr. George Harper, DSN 1946, Officer Clifford Harper, DSN 2068, SLMPD, retired, and brother-in-law of Mrs. Domenica Harper, DSN 3501, SLMPD , Communication's Specialist. Officer Clifford Harper continues to serve in a civilian capacity as a Informational Systems Coordinator at the Communications Division.

Sergeant Harper was a veteran of the United States Army and served from 06/01/1972 to 06/01/1974 and achieved the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

It should be noted that the attendance for the wake of Sergeant Ralph Harper was the largest in the history of the Kutis Funeral Home.

Sgt. Harper died on Monday, October 29, 2018 at 7:30 am after being shot by
robbery suspect's outside a relative’s home in south St. Louis. Sgt. Harper was 66
years old and lived nearby. After being shot, Sgt. Harper returned fire and shot one of the assailants during this robbery before falling unconscious, Sgt. Harper was able to contact 911 to report the incident and give a description of the fleeing suspect's. Because of his heroic actions, the suspect and his accomplice who shot Sgt. Harper were quickly arrested along with 3Rd suspect and all were charged accordingly.

Sgt. Harper is the son of the late St. Louis Police Police Captain Edward S. Harper and his dear mother Mrs. Helen M. (nee Kotraba) Harper.

Sgt. Harper is survived by his loving wife Mrs. Marilyn (nee Bernhard) Harper and four brothers, Mr. Edward (Christine), Mr. John (Janice), Mr. George (Patti) and
Mr. Clifford (Domenica) Harper.

Sgt. Harper and his brothers were all proud members of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. The Harper family collectively served more than 200 years of faithful and dedicated service to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the St. Louis community. Although Edward, John and George have retired or left the department, Clifford continues to serve in the Communications Division, as well as his wife Mrs. Domenica Harper. Sgt. Harper was a member of the St. Louis Police Veterans Association.

Sgt. Harper is the proud uncle of Diana (Dave) Curran, Jennifer, Andrea, Michael,
Emily, Lily, Candice and Lucas Harper, Jeff (Michelle) and Lisa Moenigmann; proud great uncle to Toni Keller‐Jackson, Joey (Maggie) and Bobby Moenigmann, Leah, Owen and Aiden Curran; proud great‐great uncle to Emily and Jacob Moenigmann.

Sgt. Harper leaves behind his sweet aunt Mary (Creasey) and many cousins,
extended family members, friends, co‐workers and a grieving community of
caring neighbors and strangers. Sgt. Harper was most proud of his loving and
supported police family.

Shortly after graduating from St. Mary’s High School, Sgt. Harper was drafted and
served honorably as an Army Military Police Officer for two years at Fort
Huachuca, Arizona. After his discharge, Sgt. Harper returned to St. Louis to follow
in his father’s footsteps and became a St. Louis Metropolitan Police Officer.

Sgt. Harper was an avid golfer and thoroughly enjoyed his regular golf games with special friends, and was proud of playing golf in every state. Sgt. Harper loved playing with his kitty “Star” and taking long morning walks with his puppies “Calvin” and “Boo”. Sgt. Harper also leaves behind his nephew Jeff and niece Lisa, great niece Toni, and great nephews Joe and Bob, kept Sgt. Harper busy making trips to the lake and fishing. Sgt. Harper enjoyed being with his family. Most importantly, he protected and treasured his loving wife of 43 years, Marilyn.

Sgt. Harper was always the hit of the party, funny, comical and spontaneous.
Whether it was his Michael Jackson moonwalk or his traditional rendition of “The
Night Before Christmas”, the performances were always memorable.

He took pride in his police work, with strict compliance and passion, to make
certain the job was done right and the community was well‐served. He was overly supportive of his fellow officers and their well‐being. He was a well respected officer, trusted partner, leader and mentor to many officers and the police community.

Sgt. Harper was a HERO and left an indelible legacy to his family and the
community. Although he will be missed by so many, he will never be forgotten
and always loved.

The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM, on Friday, November 2, 2018, at Saint Wenceslaus Catholic Church, located at 3014 Oregon Avenue, St. Louis MO.

Immediately following the mass, Sergeant Harper will be laid to rest at Resurrection Cemetery at 6901 McKenzie Road, St. Louis MO.
