He was born in Pope County, Illinois to Wayne and Lucille (Elam) Bates on September 1, 1944. He was raised in Brownfield and was a lifetime Pope Countian. He was a proud member of Temple Hill Church. He had worked as a mechanic, farm hand, construction, spar mine, and as a tow truck driver.
Allen is survived by son, Carl Bates; daughter, Carla (Larry) Barger; three grandchildren, Sherry (Jessie) Barger, Heather (Eric) Evans, Jessica Jones; six great grandchildren, Olivia, Alex, Madison, Kholter, Janayah, Mason; brother, Lyndell (Laura) Bates; sister, Floy Swinford; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert “Buster”, Jackie, Jo Paul, Hartley, one sister, Virginia Dale Woods.
Funeral service will be 3:00 pm on Sunday October 21, 2018 at Aly Funeral Home in Eddyville, IL. The service will be conducted by Bro. Jerry Parr. Interment will follow the service at Waltersburg Cemetery.
