Noted Meridian Physician Dies

Meridian, Miss., April 20 - Dr. Martin Luther Flynt, Sr., 68, prominent in social and medical circles in this city and the state of Mississippi, died at Riley's Hospital Sunday afternoon at 5:50.

Dr. Flynt took up his residence in Meridian some 16 years ago, after having spent many years in Newton. Formerly he was the owner of the Newton Infirmary.

Dr. Flynt suffered a broken leg in an accident some weeks ago. According to report, a blood clot and pneumonia developed later and these complications resulted in his death, it is stated.

The deceased was well known in the medical world and held memberships in the Lauderdale County, East Miss., and Miss. State Medical Societies, an honorary membership in the Theta Kappa Psi Medical Fraternity, a charter membership in the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and he was among the first Mississippi members of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Flynt was a devout Christian, having his membership in the First Baptist church where he had been a deacon. He was a Rotarian for 20 years in Newton and Meridian and was a Mason and a Shriner. Dr. Flynt graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1908.

Funeral services were held from the Williams Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 3, with Dr. Norman W. Cox officiating. Interment was made in the Magnolia cemetery.

The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louella Tillson Flynt, a daughter, Miss Erma Lee Flynt; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Mayo Flynt and Dr. and Mrs. M. L. Flynt, Jr., a sister, Mrs. Ora Johnson, Gulfport; two brothers, Johnson Flynt, Hattiesburg and W. F. Flynt, Sanatorium, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Active pallbearers: Albert Covington, John Dear, Dr. F. G. Riley, Dr. Paul Parker, Hoyt Davis, Odell May, R. M. Hammell, Henry O'Dom, Robert Brewer and Sidney Burns of Newton.

Honorary pallbearers: Deacons of the First Baptist Church, members of the Rotary Club, directors and Personnel of the First National bank, and members of the East Mississippi Medical society.
