She was born the 4th of five children to the late Rev. Luther and Nellie Whitman and graduated from Nuttall High School in Fayette County. She retired from the State of West Virginia Employment Security Office and volunteered at Thomas Memorial Hospital.
She was known for her quick smile and laugh, Hazel worked selflessly for her family, still having time to volunteer at the local hospital and at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church where she was an active member. She was a very smart and professional lady.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Griffith; daughter, Linda Carol Duttine; sisters, Frances Knowles, Garnet “Rose” Smith and Donna Sater; brother, Ernest Whitman.
Hazel is survived by her daughters, Connie (Brad) Stewart, and Terry (Kermit) Smith; son, Jason (Amy) Griffith; grandchildren, Matthew Duttine, Jeremy Carte, Kevin Smith, Brittany Edwards, Sadie Griffith and Levi Griffith; eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A service to Honor the Life of Hazel will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday April 5, 2018 at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in St. Albans, with Pastor Barry Moll officiating. Burial will be held in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Family and Friends may visit from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to St. Peter’s United Methodist Church, 2601 Forrestal Ave., St. Albans, WV 25177 or to Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, 4007 Propps Ridge Rd., Lookout, WV 25868 (Rev. Luther Whitman’s past parish).
