Musical Director. Born Paul Wetstein in Springfield, Massachusetts, he was one of the most diverse and talented arrangers and conductors of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1944, he became the first A&R director for Capital Records and was responsible for arranging many popular songs such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "Day by Day", "Autumn in New York", "Song of India" and "Night and Day". He joined Columbia Records in 1950, where he continued to record albums of instrumental mood music for movies and artist like Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Shore and Doris Day. During the 1950s, he was also musical director for NBC TV and after his retirement, he was the musical director for "Disney on Parade". His wife was the popular singer Jo Stafford.
