Mr. Ned Stuart Brown, 89, Galesburg, died at 4:05 pm on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the Rosewood Care Center.

Ned was born May 10, 1929 in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Stuart and Paula Braunlich Brown. He and his two brothers enjoyed an idyllic childhood on the family farm just east of Aledo, where he developed a great passion and love of farming. In his youth, he enjoyed playing football, swimming, and spending time with his family and friends.

He graduated from Aledo High School in 1947 and Iowa State College in 1951, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mary Dyball of Belle Fourche, South Dakota.

After starting his farming career with his older brother, Don, at New Boston, Illinois, Ned and Mary married on January 18, 1953. They farmed there until deciding to relocate their growing family to a Coldbrook-area farm in 1958.

Ned was a member of Coldbrook Christian Church where he served in a variety of capacities, including Sunday School teacher, youth group leader, board member, elder and trustee. He served on the school boards of New Boston and Galesburg District 205, was a member of the Western Farm Business Farm Management and Starting Point boards, and volunteered at Knox County Habitat for Humanity and Prison Ministry at Henry C. Hill Correctional Center. He was named Prairie Farmer’s Master Farmer of the Year in 1986.

Not afraid of hard work, Ned realized the value of rest and relaxation, too. He and Mary planned summer vacations for their family that took them to a lake where he and the kids could boat, swim and waterski while Mary read and relaxed!

Through the years, Ned and Mary hosted many young people from other countries. They enjoyed these friendships for many years to come and later visited some of these young people in their homelands. They enjoyed traveling and exploring the world together.

Ned’s love of Christ was evident to all he encountered! He faithfully ministered to the sick and needy and was a good steward of God’s creation. He had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh, and was known to play some pretty creative pranks! His favorite Bible verse was Romans 8:18.

Ned is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Stuart (Carine) Brown of Cameron and Peter (Karen) Brown of Spartanburg, South Carolina; three daughters, Sandy (Tom) Wallace of Galesburg, Peggy (Scott) Howard of Simpsonville, South Carolina, and Molly (Rick) Mendenhall of Peachtree City, Georgia; fifteen grandchildren Katie, Tami, Tommy, Elise, Andy, Sydna, Jonathan, Parker, Reid, Bennett, Janelle, Tyler, Bethany, Eme and Harrison and seventeen great-grandchildren, Mallory, James, Aaron, Austin, Mariah, Jacob, Madison, Allison, Quincy, Cooper, Evie, Liz, Will, Paisley, Amelia, Colby, and Aiden. He is also survived by his brother, Donald (Nancy) Brown of Galesburg.

He was preceded in death by infant daughter Susan Kay Brown and his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Joan Brown.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, October 29, 2018 at Coldbrook Christian Church with Pastor Rick W. Warren officiating. No visitation will be held, family will continue to celebrate Ned’s life following the service in the Fellowship Hall. Ned donated his body to medical science and his ashes will be scattered on the family farm at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to Coldbrook Christian Church, Habitat for Humanity, The Galesburg Rescue Mission, or Hospice Compassus. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Funeral Directors and Cremation Service is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
