A short obituary appeared in the Pall Mall Gazette (17 December 1868): 'Mr Henry Wyndham Phillips, who recently died at his residence at Sydenham, was the son of Thomas Phillips, R.A., professor of painting in the Academy, and was himself a painter of some mark. His portraits of Layard, Clyde, Lawrence, Speke and Grant, and many others, are well known. Mr Phillips was one of the founders of the Cosmopolitan Club; the indefatigable chief of the 2nd Middlesex or Artists' Rifle Corps; the secretary of the Artists' General Benevolent Society; and a supporter of half a score other social and useful institutions.
