Mary Emma Helman, York Springs, and Paul Jacob Diehl, Carlisle R.D. 6, were united in marriage Wednesday evening at 7 o'clock in the Mt. Tabor United Brethren Church parsonage. Rev. George E. Snyder performed the ceremony.

Mary Ellen Diehl, 102, died on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at Thornwald Home, Carlisle. She was born on March 30, 1916, to George Reynolds Helman and Gerta Mae (Gulden) Helman, on a farm near York Springs in Adams County.
Mary attended a one-room school house and was awarded a Common School diploma by the Public Schools of Adams County in 1931. Later, at the age of 41, Mary completed the entire 4-year High School correspondence course through the American School in Chicago, IL and was awarded its High School Course Diploma in 1957. On November 8, 1939, Mary married Paul J. Diehl, who later owned a feed and grain business in Boiling Springs—Paul bought, sold and delivered corn and grain, and Mary handled the books. Paul Diehl died in 1998. The couple had one son, Robert Paul Diehl, born in 1940, and now deceased. Before her marriage, Mary was employed by a sewing factory in York Springs. After the couple moved to Boiling Springs, Mary was employed, at various times, by Minerva Yarn, the Standard Piezo Company and McCoy Electronics, all in Carlisle, and she retired from the Book of the Month Club in Mechanicsburg after 12 years. Mary and her husband Paul lived in Boiling Springs for 37 years, followed by 9 years on Forge Road and 22 years in a cottage at the Sarah A. Todd Home in Carlisle. At the age of 99, Mary entered the Thornwald Home where she spent her final years. Mary and Paul were members of the Boiling Springs United Methodist Church on 4th Street in Boiling Springs, and after its closing Mary became a member of the Barnitz United Methodist Church. Notable for her quick sense of humor and infectious laugh, Mary's sunny disposition was a blessing to all who knew her. A brother, Guy Helman, died in May of this year.
She is survived by three granddaughters, Chrystal Starr, Kimberly Diehl and Kelli Cummings, as well as several great-grandchildren.
A viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. in the Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle with Rev. Matthew Plant officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens, Carlisle. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barnitz United Methodist Church, 23 Church Lane, Carlisle, PA 17015.
