Earl was born on June 25, 1935, in rural Faribault, Minnesota, the son of Elmer and Mary (Robinson) Young. Some knew Earl as “Sam.” He was a graduate of Faribault in 1953. Earl was a member of the Army Reserves. Earl married MaryAnn Marquardt on September 19, 1954. The couple farmed in rural Faribault for many years. Earl and his family were recognized as Farm Family of the Year by the Rice County American Dairy Assn. Earl worked at the Faribault Golf and Country Club, Boldt Funeral Home, mowed the Meadow Ridge Cemetery, picked up samples for Hastings Lab, and when possible, helped friends with planting, rock picking, and harvesting. Earl was a FFA member in high school and 4-H leader while his children were involved. Earl and MaryAnn were active in the Northfield-Rice Holstein Club, American Dairy Association, Rice County Farm Bureau, and Rice County Pork Producers. Earl served on the Walcott Township Board and was an usher at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Earl is survived by his wife MaryAnn of 64 years, and 7 children - Jan Brudvig, Carol (Glen) Meyer, Mark Young, Mike (Barb) Young, Jim Young, Lori (Dave) Lyons, and Brent (Katie) Young. Earl loved being grandpa to nine grandchildren – Sarah (Scott) Hansen, Jon (Heather) Meyer, Jenny (Ross) Recker, Mitch Lyons, Matthew (Kim) Young, Benjamin Young and friend Kaitlyn Haskin, Dan Brudvig, Tate and Hattie Young. Earl loved spending time with his 3 great-grandchildren as well – Conner and Aubree Hansen, and Kaiden Meyer. Earl was eagerly awaiting the birth of Matt and Kim’s son. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Schuenke; sister-in-law Helen Marquardt; brother-in-law Edgar Olson; beloved nieces and nephews; and life-long friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Mary Young; son-in-law Steve Brudvig; and daughter-in-law LaVonne Young; brother Harold (Fonda) Young; sister Mildred (Hugh) Leslie; brother-in-law Louis Schuenke; nephew Ron Young; his in-laws, Herold and Esther Marquardt; and sister-in-law Phyllis Olson.
The family wishes memorials to Trinity Radio Club, Trinity Building fund, Brighton Hospice, or donors’ choice.
The family appreciates all of the loving care provided by the doctors and nurses for Earl these last few years. Earl was a farmer to the end of his life. He loved driving or riding around seeing what farmers were up to in the fields. Special thanks to Dick Langeslag and Tom and Andy Sammon for allowing Earl to farm with them for many years in his retirement!
