Originally a lawyer, he later became President of the NHL from 1977-1992, John Ziegler Jr. helped the league change from unstable to prosperous. He was responsible for the NHL-WHA merger that merged 4 teams into the NHL. He was the first American to serve as a chief executive of the NHL. He also received the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1984. Later in 1987 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
