Leroy was a 1944 graduate of Orrville High School. He served in the Army/Air Force in Germany, reporting and cleaning up casualties at three of Hitler’s concentration camps and later with the 20th Air Force in Guam for 5 1/2 years. He married Kathleen R. Cramer of Fredericksburg, Ohio, on August 11, 1949. Leroy served on the Ohio State Highway Patrol for eight years and was assigned to the Mansfield area in 1953. He then went to work for G.M. Fisher Body plant in Mansfield in 1956 for the Security Department. He retired in 1987 after working 31 years at G.M.
Leroy was a member of the Ontario United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #16, AASR Valley of Columbus and the Venus Masonic Lodge #152 F & AM. He also was very active with the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Chairman and Councilman for Boy Scout Troop #117 for 40 years. Leroy was an avid fisherman. He had a passion for gardening and couldn’t wait till spring planting season. He was a member of the Men’s Garden Club of Mansfield for many years. Leroy was a friend of A.A. for 51 years.
Leroy is survived by his wife of 69 years, Kathleen Cramer Santmyer; two sons, Robert (Karen) Santmyer of Avon Park, FL and Steve (Lori) Santmyer of Ontario, OH; daughter-in-law, Sally Bowen Santmyer of Mansfield; five grandchildren, Jeremiah (Charlene) Santmyer, Eric (Rachel) Santmyer, Jaimie Santmyer (Ricardo) Pesce, Aaron (Mellissa) Santmyer and Ashley (Andy) Santmyer-Orewiler; eight great-grandchildren and one on the way; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and close friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Donald Santmyer and infant, Ronald Santmyer; a brother, Harry Santmyer; and three sisters, Ada Miller, Ruth Falk Birkholder and Helen Brown.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road. The funeral service conducted by Rev. Peg Welch will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 10:00 a.m. with additional visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest with military honors in Dalton Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
