named by parents Jeremiah and Betsy after Jeremiah's maternal grandfather, Ericus Smith Sr and/or Jeremiah's maternal uncle, Ericus Smith Jr. Ericus Hatfield's given name is misspelled in multiple ways on various records or badly transcribed--Encus, Erikus, Arik, Aric, Elicus, Erasmas, Erastmas, etc. In his later years he simply went by the letter "E" as a given name;

father of Evaline, Martha, Joseph, William, Susan, Noah, L.B., David, Mary, Nancy;

Originally a farmer, Ericus eventually retired from farming and became a preacher in his "golden years". Baptized into Hinds Valley Baptist Church of Morgan and Roane Counties on Saturday 3 Nov 1855. He and Mary left Hinds Valley in 1870 and joined Haley Grove Church in Crab Orchard, Cumberland County Tennessee.
