Tommaso (born Giacomo ) De Vio , known as Cardinal Caetano or Gaetano), was an Italian cardinal . A Dominican religious , he was General of the Order in 1508 : he was a theologian and papal diplomat .

In 1484 he entered the Dominican friars of the monastery of Gaeta, where he assumed the name of Thomas, and continued his studies in theology and philosophy in Naples , Bologna and Padua .

He was a professor of theology at the universities of Pavia and Rome , and in this field gained considerable fame following a public debate with Pico della Mirandola in 1494 in Ferrara .

From 1508 to 1518 he became general of the Order and adviser to the popes; in 1511 he showed great zeal in defending the papal rights against the Council of Pisa , arguing against Jacques Almain in a series of publications that were banned by the Sorbonne and burnt by order of King Louis XII of France .

In 1517 Pope Leo X created him cardinal, and in 1518 he was made archbishop of Palermo ; the following year, in 1519 , he became archbishop of Gaeta .

In 1518 he was sent to Germany as Apostolic Legate to participate in the Diet of Augsburg , he worked with profit for the election of Charles V of Habsburg to Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire on 28 June 1519 (prevailing over the other competitor Francesco I Re di France ), and there he tried to stem the nascent Protestant Reformation of Martin Luther ( 12-14 October 1518 ).

In 1519 he returned to Rome without being able to convince Martin Luther to abandon his reformist intentions, and helped the pope in extending the bull Exsurge Domine aimed at countering the spread of the Lutheran reform.

In 1523 until 1524 he organized the resistance against the Turks in Germany , Poland and Hungary .

In 1527 he was taken prisoner during the Sack of Rome by the Lanzichenecchi , sent to Italy by Charles V to punish Pope Clement VII for the betrayal of the word given to him, then he was freed.

In 1534 he pronounced the final sentence of validity of the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon , refusing the divorce to the English sovereign.

Alongside the theological production, according to the lines of the Thomist school , Thomas De Vio also distinguished himself as an exegete . He supplanted his non-knowledge of Hebrew, consulting rabbinical experts and his familiarity with the Greek text. Between 1523 and 1532 he published in various volumes a literary translation and commentary of the Bible which includes a large part of the Old Testament and almost the entire New Testament with the exception of the Apocalypse of John . His emphasis on the search for the literary meaning of the text places it at the origins of the modern Catholic exegetical tradition.

He died in Rome in 1534 ; his tomb is today placed in the vestibule of the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva
