Eliza May Klumph was born October 20, 1855 in Cedar Rapids, Ia., and passed away at her home near Chester April 1, 1943, at the age of 87 years, 5 months and 12 days.
Her childhood and early life were spent in the vicinity of Cedar Rapids. On January 1, 1873 she was united in marriage to Gabriel B. Carpenter who preceded her in death January 1, 1929. To this union were born seven children: Stace Carpenter of Sidney, Ia., Mrs. William Cornforth of Miami, Ariz., Mrs. Frank Grissom of Omaha, Sam Carpenter of Chester, Mrs. Buford Clark of Reynolds, Neb., Mrs John Lowe of Boulder, Colo., and Van Carpenter of Chester.
In 1885 these pioneers homesteaded in Kansas, southwest of Belleville, then moved to a farm near Hubbell, in 1893. Since the death of her husband she had made her home with her two sons Sam and Van.
This beautiful character lived a contented life of love and devotion. Much of her time was given to caring for the sick and helping those in need. Her cheerful spirit brought comfort into many homes. The last ten years she had had failing health and on March 13 suffered a stroke. She passed away peacefully when the end came.
She leaves to mourn her children, 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren; and a host of friends.
