Abel Wright was born on 22 August 1695 in Springfield, Hampshire County (present-day Hampden County), Massachusetts, a son of Abel Wright and Rebecca Terry. The family removed to Lebanon, Connecticut about 1700.

Abel Wright married Mary Calkins on 7 November 1717 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut.

On 22 October 1718, Abel Wright was deeded 180 acres of land in Lebanon from his father.

Abel Wright was a resident of Windham, Windham County, Connecticut from 1718 until 1734, when he removed to Mansfield, Windham County (present-day Tolland County), Connecticut.

In March 1738, Abel Wright purchased proprietor shares in Kent while residing in Mansfield. He was a resident of Kent, Hartford County (present-day Litchfield County), Connecticut from about 1740 until 1744 where he served as militia captain.

By July 1743, Abel Wright was involved in a disagreement with the leadership of the Congregational Church in Kent where he had been an original member. He and his wife Mary had their membership suspended on 4 August 1743.

In 1744, he relocated to the Philipse Patent, Dutchess County, New York (present-day Southeast, Putnam County, New York), to join his brothers-in-law John Calkins ("Jr.") and Jeremiah Calkins. His father-in-law John Calkins also relocated (deeds; tax records). The men lived in the Southern Precinct near the present-day hamlet of Milltown. John Calkins the elder died in 1745 and Abel Wright died the following year. Both were laid to rest near their homes in the founding settlers' cemetery: Sears Burying Ground (Old Southeast Cemetery) in the Town of Southeast where the oldest remaining legible marker is dated 1751.

NOTE: Abel Wright (1695 – 1746), proprietor and farmer, has been confused with his grandson of the same name, Abel Wright (1749 – 1770), merchant and shopkeeper of Kent, a son of Abel Wright (1722 – 1762) and Abigail Morgan.

Abel Wright (1749 – 1770), merchant and shopkeeper of Kent, has a headstone in Good Hill Cemetery in Kent which reads as follows:

Here lies the
Body of Mr.
Abel Wright who
Departed this
life June 7th 1770
in ye 22d year of
his age.

This gravestone has been affected by lichen colonization with biotic weathering and formation of mineral deposits, resulting in an elevated, bumpy surface over much of the face of the stone. One of the areas least affected by this process is the number "22" which remains smooth and well defined.

There were four or more men named Abel Wright in the Kent area over time who have been conflated both on the internet and in publication despite multiple indicators that they could not be the same. Errors in distinguishing the various Abel Wrights which first appeared in Democracy in the Connecticut frontier town of Kent by Charles S. Grant (1961) were further compounded in Wicked Litchfield County by Peter C. Vermilyea (2016).
