HAZEL MAE WOOD WILLIAMSON

1922 – 2018

Hazel Mae Wood Williamson was born on May 4, 1922, in Lutie, Oklahoma and enjoyed life for 95 years. She died on April 1, 2018 in Muskogee, OK. She treasured the love and friendship of all she knew and counted times with family and friends the best of life. She especially enjoyed reunions where she could reminisce with her Wood, Mills, and Holbird relatives, and at her Panola High School class homecoming banquets and church gatherings.

She was the youngest child of Lena Elsie Mills Wood and Charles Omar Wood and sister of Roy Elmo, Edgar Scott, Halsey Leander, and Lena Rosina (Rose) Wood Warden. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Elaine Dunagan Ambler and husband Peter Ambler of Wilmington, NC; grandsons, Omar Sean Martin and wife Kristine of Tallahassee, FL, Brenden Todd Martin, and Louie Allan Moore of Dallas, TX; and great-grandchildren, Katherine Elaine Martin, Harrison Scott Martin, and Julia Marie Martin of Tallahassee, FL. She is also survived by nieces, Marcia Warden Brown, Kei Warden La Fleur, and Susan (Nancy) Wood Delpino, and nephew Charles (Butch) Wood. Nephews Duane Wood, Michael Warden, and Patrick Warden preceded her in death. Other survivors include several cousins, many third and fourth generation relatives, step-grandchildren, and numerous friends.

Hazel attended elementary school at Lutie and graduated from Panola High School with the class of 1940. In 1942, she received her Associate Degree in Home Economics from Eastern Oklahoma A&M. Over the following several years she taught school at Hulsey Prairie for a semester and then worked for the Department of Public Welfare in Latimer and Wagoner Counties. After deciding to get her elementary teaching degree, she entered Southeastern State College and graduated in 1951. While there she met and married Dale Ernest Williamson, who preceded her in death in 2012. The two of them taught at many small schools in rural Oklahoma including Fame, Stone Bluff, Rocky Hill, and Oakdale. She sponsored 4-H Club and directed school programs in all these communities. Hazel also taught at Boynton before she retired from teaching at Taft Moton in 1980. Hazel was honored twice with teacher of the year awards: Muskogee County for School of Boynton and Wagoner County.

After retirement she was an active volunteer at the crisis pregnancy center, Meals on Wheels, Muskogee Hospital, and Gospel Rescue Mission.

Following the death of her husband, Hazel decided to join friends in residence at Dogwood Creek Assisted Living. She enjoyed many group activities there, but especially liked tending her plants and feeding the birds at her patio.

Wherever she lived, Hazel was active in a local Baptist Church. She taught classes for Sunday school and Bible school, presented programs for WMU and provided many delicious dishes for church potluck dinners. Her baked beans and banana nut cakes will be missed by friends and family alike.

A special thank you to the staff of Dogwood Creek Retirement Center, Broadway Manor Nursing Home and Hometown Hospice for their loving care.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 6, 2018 in Fosters’ Ivory Chapel at Foster-Petering Funeral Home with Bill Crow officiating. Entombment will follow in Memorial Park Mausoleum.
