Evelyn Clayton Hoover, 88, of Pittsfield passed away Monday October 22, 2018 in Pittsfield. She was born July 23, 1930 in Morgan County to Henry and Mary Angeline Woolsey Clayton. She married Carrol Kay Hoover of Milton on June 4, 1955 in Winchester. Carrol survives at home.
Also surviving is their daughter Ruth Ann (Brian) Hinton of Watkinsville, GA, three grandchildren Matthew Evan Hinton, Gabriel Arran Hinton, and Katrina Elyse (Chris) McCarver and three great grandchildren, Max Hinton, Amelia and Abby Grace McCarver.
She was preceded in death by a daughter Ramona Ellen, her parents and two brothers, Edwin Eugene and Gerald Henry Clayton.
Evelyn was raised in Scott County where she graduated from Winchester High School. Upon graduation from Shertleff College in Alton, she taught 3 years at Winchester Grade School and the remainder of her 29 year career at Higbee Jr High in Pittsfield.
She was an active member of First Christian Church in Pittsfield, serving as an Elder, Trustee and leader of CWF activities. She loved to sing in the choir and especially looked forward to Christmas Vesper service. She was also active in the Pittsfield Garden Club, Illinois Audubon Society and Morgan Audubon Society , and was an avid birder, having organized the annual bird count in Pike County.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Saturday October 27, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Pittsfield. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday October 26 from 5 until 8 pm at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Pittsfield First Christian Church.
