Richard Douglas Saunders, of Glenview, passed away January 24, 2015. Beloved husband of Elizabeth Kurtz Saunders; loving father of Laura Saunders Bernhardt and Patricia Saunders Garfield; cherished grandfather of Russell Saunders Bernhardt, Carolyn Elizabeth Bernhardt, Taylor Saunders Garfield and Peter Saunders Garfield. Born on April 25, 1926, Richard enjoyed a long and successful business career particularly focused on the financial performance of organizations. He graduated from Northwestern University after two years of service with the Navy during the end of World War II. While attending Northwestern, Richard helped to found and lead a chapter of Chi Psi Fraternity. He also was a proud alumni of New Trier High School having recently attended his 70th reunion. An avid sports and history enthusiastic, he enjoyed playing tennis, reading and traveling--both internationally as well as to all 50 states. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, 4:30 p.m. at the Village Presbyterian Church, 1300 Shermer Road, Northbrook, IL 60062. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The ALS Association, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 6051, Albert Lea, MN, 56007 or Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy/CURE365, 2306 Indian Ridge Drive, Glenview, IL 60026 or a charity of choice.
