Jim and Katie first pioneered in the wilderness, near the settlement of Tavistock, (most likely East Zorra Township) Upper Canada and built their log cabin. There is a story that says that Katie was taking drinking water to Jim, who was ploughing a field, near the forest some distance from the cabin. Looking back, she saw that the cabin was on fire. Their first two children were burnt to death in that dreadful fire. Thus, with their modest dwelling destroyed and their children dead, Jim and Katie decided to move and start over. They resettled and homesteaded on Lot 24, Concession 6 of Elma Township, Perth County. The farm was located about 3 miles east of the village of Atwood, Ontario. There, about ¼ mile south of the road, they built another log cabin, worked at clearing fields and again began raising their family.
