                         DEATHS
    Marcus H. Bates, Sr., 90, of rural Hiawatha, died on Tuesday morning, January 18, 1994, at the Sabetha Manor, where he had been a resident since January 5. He had suffered a stroke on December 6, and had been in failing health since that time.
    He was born at Salem, Nebraska on February 4, 1903, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bates, and had lived in this area nearly all his life. He bought a farm near Hamlin in Brown County in 1944, where he farmed, along with other skills such as mechanic, welder, painting and carpenter. Until the time of the stroke, he was at home on the farm doing related activities.
    Mr. Bates was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Hamlin.
    He was married to Rose Harring on June 25, 1925, at Hiawatha. She survives.
    Also surviving are a daughter, Eleanor Koenig of rural Hiawatha, a son, Marcus Bates, Jr., of Wetmore, a sister, Mamie Brading of Hiawatha; five grandchildren, one step-grandchild, 15 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild.
    He was preceded in death by two sisters, Myrtle Taylor, and Margie Merchant, and three brothers, Jack Bates and Dallas Bates, and Oliver Bates, as a small child.
    Funeral services are planned for 10:30 Friday morning, January 21, 1994, at the Framke-Casselman-Meek Funeral Home, with Dr. David J. Hottenstein officiating. Interment will follow at the Hamlin Cemetery.
