Professional Football Coach. He was the head coach of the National Football League's New England Patriots during the 1990 season. Born Rodney A. Rust, he played football collegiately at Iowa State University from 1947 to 1948. He went on to be an assistant coach for most of his career, working primarily for head coaches Marv Levy and Dick Vermeil. After Levy was fired as head coach of the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs in 1982, he went to the New England Patriots to serve as their defensive coordinator. He was a part of their 1985 American Football Conference-winning team that played in Super Bowl XX against the Chicago Bears. He continued to be an assistant coach for several other teams before being named as the head coach of the Patriots in 1990. He coached the team for one year before being fired after a 1-15 season. He later was the head coach of the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes from 2000 to 2001. He continued in coaching until 2006 before leaving the profession.
